Tomi Pelkonen is a versatile designer; his work ranging from hand-built, unique ceramic pieces through sanitary elements to 3D tableware renderings. Appreciative of Japanese design style, the world of cartoons and sci-fi, he is keen to inject an element of humour into the design process.

Io

IO

Material: Stoneware; 3 hand-built and paper kiln-fired bowls
40X40 cm
Originally found in Greek mythology, Io is one of the four moons of Jupiter. Characteristic of the volcanic moon are its vibrant colour formations and the variable structures of its rough surface: These three bowls were inspired by this heavenly body.

Kotori

KOTORI

Sake Serving Set
Material: Porcelain and oak
“Kotori” is the Japanese word for "small bird". The soft lines of this set are friendly and calm; setting the stage for a perfect Japanese meal.

Saturnus Deluxe

SATURNUS DELUXE

Schnapps Server
Material: Porcelain
Characteristically off-beat, this piece is inspired by Tomi´s interest in cartoons and toy-like forms. A real showstopper of a serving item, the Saturnus Deluxe is guaranteed to break the ice at parties and the bottle itself may be chilled in the freezer so the schnapps will stay nice and cool.

Hand Washing Basins

HAND WASH BASINS

3D Renderings
Designed as part of the final project work at the Kuopio Academy of Design in 2003, these basins illustrate Tomi´s ability as a technical designer, with a deep understanding of CAD systems, mould-making and manufacturing processes.

Fragile

FRAGILE

Handbuilt Lantern
Material: Porcelain
Fragile is made from a single sheet of super fine porcelain. Inspired by the Japanese art of origami, this lightweight piece accents beautifully the flickering light of a candle.

RYTMI (Finnish: Rhythm)

3D Rendering
Rytmi is a storage and serving solution designed to save space in the kitchen. The set includes bottles for oil and vinegar, a magnetic spice rack and containers for various foodstuffs. Originally designed together with Susanna Vesalainen, Rytmi received an honorary mention in the O!VALLUS competition in Finland in 2005.
